Modular or Manufactured?  What is the difference and what is right for you?

Manufactured homes are built to a Federal Code established by HUD.  It is referred to as the HUD Code.  These homes meet high levels construction standards.  The Code is updated frequently to assure that you are buying a quality home.  Once the home is sited on a permanent foundation system, most people would not be able to tell the difference between a manufactured home and a modular home.

A modular home is a factory built home built to the current International Building Code.  The same code as site built homes are constructed to.  Some municipalities and counties have adopted some or all of the IBC.  To insure that your home meets the requirements of your location, you will need to contact the local building or planning office in your city or county.    Locate your City or County contact information here.

The Manufactured Housing Institute has published an excellent guide to buying a manufactured home.  Reviewing this will give you the background and knowledge to begin your shopping experience.
